[post_content] => Practice Passage (Question 1-5)

In the United States a large part of a child’s education is focused on their academic achievement, as measured by standardized exams. As a result American public school curriculums often focus on improving skills associated with high scores on the tests, rather than focusing on other markers of success. Because this model can be incredibly frustrating for students, some parents seek out alternative education approaches in the hopes of nurturing their child’s development and growth.
The Good Student is an alternative school that uses current research on children’s natural development to form curriculums, with the hope of fostering independence and joy for learning. The school provides mixed age classrooms where students are encouraged to work on activities that they enjoy and where they can learn from practice, rather than from instruction. Children’s parents are often invited to join the students throughout the day, in an effort to provide a supportive learning environment that will extend outside of the classroom. In addition, each child is followed extensively (using case study methodology) to learn more about their unique needs and learning styles. Information from three such case studies can be found in Table 1.
Table 1
The school also conducts its own research to improve skill development. In one experiment, the teachers brought in the mothers of half of the children in the program. The children were asked to decide which items of furniture should be placed in particular dollhouses. Half of the children were allowed to play with their mother in a similar situation before the mothers were taken away, while the other half played with the dollhouse alone. All of the children were then asked to attempt the task alone.

[question] => What stage of conflict best describes the development of Jane’s behavior?
[value] => Array
(
[answer] => 2
[description] => Reason for Correct Answer:
This question focuses on Erikson’s Theory of Development.
Jane wants to take the lead of tasks.
Jane is conflicted between gaining autonomy and shame or doubt. Her mother should let her do these small tasks by herself while watching her in order to encourage, help, and keep her from failing. That is the hallmark of Erikson’s second stage of development.

[question] => Steven is a school age boy who is trying to develop competence in his schoolwork. However, failure of reinforcement from authority at this stage of development results in which of the following consequences?
[value] => Array
(
[answer] => 2
[description] => Reason for Correct Answer:
This question focuses on Erikson’s Theory of Development.
Steven is at a stage where his family, peers, and school have a huge impact on his development. He is trying to achieve a sense of accomplishment.
Steven will feel inferior rather than industrious since he isn’t getting the encouragement from his elders. He will feel he isn’t competent because he is comparing himself to other students accomplishing similar tasks as he is.

[question] => Which of Kohlberg’s stages of moral development best describes Mark’s experience?
[value] => Array
(
[answer] => 1
[description] => Reason for Correct Answer:
Mark was not punished or reprimanded for taking the chocolate bar.
Mark is only thinking about himself in this situation, not how his teacher or peers may react.
Since Mark wasn’t punished for disobeying; he doesn’t think he did anything wrong in taking the candy bar. This describes the pre-conventional level of morality, which is defined by punishment versus obedience and self-interest.

[question] => The central conflict in the eighth stage of Erikson’s theory focuses on integrity vs. despair and involves reflecting back on your life. Those who are unsuccessful at resolving this conflict will look back with regret, anger, and bitterness. Those who are successful will feel a sense of satisfaction with the life they have lived. According to Erikson, those who are successful in this stage emerge with which virtue?
[value] => Array
(
[answer] => 3
[description] => Reason for Correct Answer:
This is the last stage of development in life according to Erikson
People at this stage experience the conflict of integrity v. despair and yearn that they feel fulfillment in life
The virtue described at this stage of development is wisdom. Older people have gained enough experience to look back on life feeling they accomplished what they wanted to and learned as much as they could and this wisdom is shared with the generations that follow them.

[question] => The results of the school’s experiment found that children who had previously worked with their mother showed the greatest improvement in placing furniture into the dollhouses compared with their first attempt at the task. Based on this information, what might the school conclude is most important to focus on when a child is trying to understand and perform a task?
[value] => Array
(
[answer] => 4
[description] => Reason for Correct Answer:
Vygotsky’s Theory of Development focused on socio-cultural aspects of learning.
The purpose of having the mothers present in this study was to see if there was a difference in the child performing a task they hadn’t done in the past better than if they were to do it alone.
The central idea and conclusion of this study was to see the effects of the Zone of Proximal Development, which emphasizes guided learning and social interaction.
The Zone of Proximal Development is the difference between what a child can do independently and what they can’t do yet.
Zone of Proximal Development is accomplished with the interaction of the children with a MKO, More Knowledgeable Other, which in this case were the mothers who guided and relayed information to the children.
