Why students pick our MCAT tutors in Illinois
We turn away 520+ scorers who apply to tutor with us when they do not get why that matters. This is what we are selecting for instead.

| Our MCAT tutorsWhat we do | Other companies | |
|---|---|---|
| Who is teaching you | Tutors who struggled to their scores and remember it | Often naturals who scored high from the start |
| How they were hired | Tested for teaching and for connecting with a student, not only for a score | Selected mostly on scores and resumes |
| When they last sat it | Recently, on the current exam, so the strategies are the ones that work now | Many have not sat the MCAT in years |
| What a session is about | Strategy. How to study, where your time goes, how to stop burning out | Content. Explaining what is already in your books |
| Mindset and mental health | Built into the process, because it is usually the missing piece | Rarely covered, because it is not considered high yield |
| What the business model rewards | You not needing us. Lower prices mean we help more students, faster | Profit that grows the longer you keep needing help |
How MCAT tutors in Illinois are matched to you
Before you are paired with an MCAT tutor you fill in a match-up questionnaire. These seven answers decide who you get.
- The gap you need to closeYour practice scores against your goal score. A 498 aiming at 510 is a different brief from a 508 aiming at 515, and it needs a different mentor.
- Which sections are costing youYou rank all four, Chem/Phys, CARS, Bio/Biochem and Psych/Soc, from most to least help needed. Whichever one is costing you, you get a tutor who is strong there.
- What else your week holdsFull course load, a job, caring responsibilities. A mentor who prepped around a full schedule knows how to build one that survives contact with your actual week.
- How much time you haveYour test date and the hours you can give it each week set what is realistic and what gets cut.
- Where you have plateauedWhat you have already tried and what you think is holding you back. A plateau at 505 for three months is a different problem from never having sat a full-length.
- How you are holding upA stress rating from one to ten, and an open question for anything else your mentor should know. ADHD, anxiety and burnout all come up here, and they change how an MCAT tutor runs a session.
- Your time zoneGeography is a factor, just not the first one. We ask for your city so sessions land at an hour that works rather than at midnight.
What it does not ask is which medical school you are aiming at, until near the end. Your target school matters for planning. It is a poor basis for choosing an MCAT tutor, because what moves a score is someone who has already solved the problem you are stuck on.
After being stuck on the CARS section after months of studying, I reached out to get some expert help. I not only got the help I needed to make a 3 point jump in CARS but also in every other section.

The MCAT tutors you would work with in Illinois

Sydney T.Scored 518Sydney spent months reading almost every single MCAT prep book cover to cover and made hundreds of flashcards during her studying. Despite this comprehensive review, she was still scoring in the 500-505 range.
Hanes G.Scored 520Starting his MCAT prep, Hanes knew he was going to be challenged. Keeping himself motivated was an obstacle and time management was complicated when he had a full schedule.
Alisha A.Scored 515For 9 weeks before her exam, studying for the MCAT was Alisha’s only focus. Starting from scratch, she taught herself how to navigate the questions and to think like an MCAT exam creator.
Sophie P.Scored 520Three months before Sophie’s test date, she was scoring low 500s on her practice tests. Her consistent low scores resulted in her feeling discouraged and she struggled to get that score increase.
Sami S.Scored 519Sami only had two months to accomplish a competitive MCAT score for med school, and he was balancing an internship and summer classes.
Mishika M.Scored 516Despite facing numerous challenges, including test anxiety and issues with focusing, Mishika remained resilient in her MCAT studies.
Sarah B.Scored 526Sarah was petrified by the weight of the MCAT exam on her medical career.
Jillian M.Scored 518As a nontraditional student, Jillian’s MCAT journey was not easy. She knew her scores would have to stand out for her to be a competitive applicant.

MCAT tutors in Illinois, in person or online
Our MCAT tutors in Illinois do not meet students in person, anywhere, and we would rather say that here than let you find out after a consultation. Every session runs online.
That is a deliberate choice rather than a limitation we are working around, and the table below is the argument for it.
Scroll the table sideways to see every column.
| In person, elsewhere | Online, with usWhat we do | |
|---|---|---|
| Who can teach you | Whoever lives close enough to reach you | Every MCAT tutor on our roster, wherever they are |
| How you are matched | On who has a slot free near you | On your section gaps, score gap, test date, weekly hours and stress level |
| If one section is costing you | Whoever is free that week, strong in your weak section or not | An MCAT tutor who fixed that same section in their own prep, whichever of the four it is |
| Reviewing a session afterwards | Your own notes | The session is recorded and you keep it |
| Passage work | On paper, or on a screen between you | On a shared screen, annotated live |
| Time it costs you | The session plus the travel at both ends | The session |
| Rescheduling | Usually forfeits the slot | Moves |
| What you give up | Nothing, if a 515+ scorer in your section happens to live nearby | A room and someone physically across the table |
Look at the first row. In-person tutoring sounds like a premium version of the same service. What it does is shrink the pool of people allowed to teach you down to whoever lives nearby. Depending on where you are in Illinois that pool might be large or it might be nobody, and either way it is not selected on whether they fixed the exact problem you have.
I was trying to balance the graduate coursework from my accelerated Master's program, medical school applications, severe ADHD, and studying for my MCAT retake in only SIX WEEKS.
★★★★★Marissa C.498 → 511 · +13
The last row is the honest cost. A room and a person across the table count for something, and if being physically held to a time is the only thing that gets you studying, in person may suit you better. For everyone else, a scheduled weekly session with someone who has solved your problem does the same job.
What MCAT tutors in Illinois cost
Private MCAT tutoring is usually sold by the hour or in packages, and the spread is wide. The large companies commonly charge $200 to $500 a session. Our own rate works out at $99 an hour on a ten-session package.
That gap comes from a different cost base and a different aim. We carry no retail classroom space and no national sales team, our tutors teach part time while they are in medical school, and a lower price means we work with more students rather than fewer at a higher margin.
I have to say the MedLife Mastery pricing for tutors was much better than any other company out there. And I don't regret it at all.

Medians are what each school reports for its most recent entering class. A median is the middle of the class that got in, so half of every one of these cohorts scored below the number shown. Schools marked n/a publish no median, which is common at the Canadian schools and at a few US programs.
The score that opens Illinois
A 510 puts you at or above the median at 5 of the 9 schools here. University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine reports the highest median at 522, and Southern Illinois University School of Medicine the lowest at 508.
A median is not a cutoff. Half of every class that got in scored below the number next to their name, so a score under the median is not a closed door. It does mean the rest of your application has to carry more, and that is a harder thing to change in one cycle than a score is.
Read against the national picture, the MCAT scores for Illinois medical schools sit above average. What counts as a good MCAT score covers that, and the full Illinois school profiles carry tuition, class size, interview rates and secondary counts for each one. The official medians come from AAMC, which publishes the admissions data every school reports.
Common questions about MCAT tutors in Illinois
Are MCAT tutors in Illinois worth it?
