Kaplan MCAT Prep Course Review (2026)

Last updated 20 August 2026 by the MedLife Mastery mentor team

What Kaplan does well

  • 16 full-length practice exams, the largest bank in the category
  • 2,900+ QBank questions
  • Teachers score 520+ and are selected on student ratings
  • Four formats, so most schedules fit
  • 0% APR financing from $82 per month

Where it falls short

  • Entry price is $1,599 and the Bootcamp is $7,299
  • Most hours go to content review you can get free
  • The 15-point average requires 4,400+ questions completed
  • Live formats lock you to a fixed schedule
  • The score guarantee applies only to the 515+ course

The biggest name in MCAT prep, and the widest price range

Kaplan MCAT courses run from $1,599 to $7,299 depending on tier and how much tutoring is attached. It is the most widely used course in MCAT prep and the most thoroughly built: if a topic is on the AAMC outline, Kaplan teaches it, and teaches it to a consistent standard.

That completeness is what you are buying, and for a specific kind of student it is worth the money. For another kind of student it is the most expensive way to be told things they already know.

What you actually get for the money

A full content curriculum across every section, a large question bank, full-length exams, and instructor contact that scales with the tier you buy. The teaching is professional and standardised, which is both the strength and the limitation: you get a reliable floor and a low ceiling on how much the instruction adapts to you.

The prices move often and Kaplan runs promotions constantly. We verified this range in August 2026, and we would suggest checking the current figure before you buy rather than trusting any review page, including this one.

What almost 4,000 students told us about Kaplan

Kaplan is named in almost 4,000 conversations students have started with us, more than any other company on this page. In 700+ of them the same student also described a score that had stopped moving. In 500+ they mentioned a retake.

Two things have to be said about those numbers together, or they mislead. Kaplan appears most often partly because Kaplan is the most-used course in MCAT prep, so a large share of anyone's archive will name it. And these are co-occurrences in inbound support mail, not measured outcomes, from students who wrote in precisely because something was wrong. None of this shows Kaplan caused a stalled score.

What it does show is narrower. Several hundred students completed a thorough, expensive, well-taught content course, retained the material well enough to discuss it in detail with us, and did not move. Whatever was stopping them was not a content gap, and the course they bought was built to fix content gaps.

The Unbiased MCAT Prep Course Decision Quiz

Three different problems stall an MCAT score, and buying the wrong fix costs months. Six questions sort out which one is yours and what to spend on it. We name competitors and free resources when they beat us, and say so when the answer is spend nothing.

No email required. Your plan appears on screen.

Transparency, before you start. We sell MCAT tutoring and courses, so here are the rules this quiz follows.

  • Zero budget, nothing paid. Free resources only, and we say so.
  • Content gap, buy content first. From whoever does it best, which is usually not us. Our tutoring comes up only as an optional add-on for a big gap.
  • Competitors named and linked when they beat us: UWorld, Kaplan, Blueprint, ExamKrackers, Khan Academy.
  • We appear only where we fit, with the budget to match, and always beside a cheaper option.
  • Our free MCAT resources show up wherever they fit, and they ask for nothing.

Where it makes sense, and where it does not

Buy it if you have genuine content gaps. If there are topics you have never properly learned, Kaplan will teach them, thoroughly, and the price is defensible. This is the case the course is built for and it does it well.

Think twice if you know the content. If you can already explain the material and your score is flat, a second pass through a content curriculum is the most common expensive mistake in MCAT prep. That is the pattern behind those conversations above.

Check what the tier actually adds. The distance from $1,599 to $7,299 is mostly tutoring hours. Work out the per-hour cost and compare it against buying tutoring on its own, because it is often cheaper separately.

Kaplan is the better call ifyou have real content gaps and want the material taught from scratch, you want the biggest question bank and the most full-length exams, you need a classroom, or you want third-party financing.
We are the better call ifyou already know most of the content and are losing points to strategy, timing or passage technique, you want 1:1 time included rather than sold separately, and you would rather not pay for lecture hours.

What students who tried both told us

She is absolutely AMAZING! She took the time to teach me how to actually read and organize complex/daunting MCAT passages. She gave me tools and tricks that increased my overall score by more than 12 points in less than 2 months. She showed me how the MCAT passage/question wording is not meant to trick you, which immensely helped with my testing anxiety. She was incredibly encouraging and always took the time to make sure I was doing ok.

NM

I was looking for someone who would help me find those patterns and weaknesses. I am so happy to say that Pooja was able to help me do exactly that! In 1.5 months over 8 sessions I was able to increase my score by 13 points from my first AAMC full length to my last one. Pooja was also amazing at reminding me to take breaks and helping me come up with a reasonable schedule without burning out.

Why students choose MedLife over traditional prep companies

This part is not about Kaplan specifically. It is the difference between us and the traditional prep-company model in general.

Traditional prep companiesMedLife Mastery
Teaching focusContent-heavy: mostly explains what is already in your books or free online.Strategy-driven: how to study efficiently and get results faster with less burnout.
Who teaches youOften high scorers or naturals who did not face the same struggle.Mentors who struggled to top scores and know the setbacks first-hand.
RecencyMany have not sat the exam in years, so advice can be outdated.Recently took the MCAT, so strategies are current and tested.
Business modelOften profit more the longer you need help. Our success is defined by you not needing us anymore.
MindsetRarely addressed, as it is not considered high yield.Built into the process, because it is often the missing piece.
Post-MCATStrictly MCAT-focused, no admissions guidance beyond the test.Your mentor can carry you into med-school applications too.
